Career Progression

Moving from Sea to Shore

USMMA engineers who sail after graduation can transition to lucrative shore positions. Here's how to prepare:

1
Get an Accredited Degree
Choose Marine Engineering Systems or Marine Engineering & Shipyard Management — both ABET accredited. An accredited engineering degree can be a requirement at many employers.
2
Progress Your License
Advance your marine license to Chief Engineer and sail as Chief. This demonstrates leadership and dedication to future employers.
3
Get an Advanced Degree
USMMA offers a remote Masters of Marine Science degree you can earn while sailing. Business degrees are also advantageous and available remotely.
4
Transition to Shore
With your credentials and experience, you'll be highly sought after at shipyards, engineering firms, government agencies, and private companies nationwide.
