Requirements

Entrance Standards

Standards for entrance into USMMA are competitive but achievable. Here's what you need:

SAT Min
500 / 500
Math / Verbal
ACT Min
20 / 20
Math / English
Required Coursework: Completion of Chemistry or Physics, and Trigonometry or Pre-Calculus
Don't have these scores yet? These are minimums, and there's time to improve. Focus on math and science preparation. Consider taking the SAT/ACT multiple times — many students improve significantly on their second or third attempt.
The Process

How to Get Your Appointment

Like other service academies, USMMA requires a congressional nomination. Here's the step-by-step process:

1
Fill Out Wrestling Questionnaire
Start by filling out our recruiting questionnaire so the coaching staff can evaluate your fit. We'll reach out by text if you're a good match for the program.
2
Contact Your Congressional Representative
Apply for a nomination from your U.S. Representative or Senators. Each member of Congress can have up to 10 midshipmen at USMMA at any time. Contact their offices early — this process begins in the spring of your junior year.
3
Apply to USMMA
Submit your application to USMMA directly. This includes your academic transcript, SAT/ACT scores, letters of recommendation, and a personal essay. The application opens in the summer before your senior year.
4
Complete Medical & Fitness
Pass the Department of Defense Medical Examination (DoDMERB) and the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA). Start preparing early — fitness tests include push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, shuttle run, basketball throw, and a 1-mile run.
5
Receive Your Appointment
Appointments are offered on a rolling basis beginning in the fall. With a nomination, qualifying test scores, and medical/fitness clearance, you'll receive your appointment to Kings Point.

5th Year Option

Prep School & 5th Year Programs

Not quite ready for USMMA? A postgraduate (5th year) at a prep school with a wrestling program can improve your academics, build maturity, and strengthen your USMMA application. Many successful USMMA wrestlers took this path.

A 5th year gives you time to raise test scores, add another year of wrestling competition, and develop as a student-athlete. Several prep schools offer strong wrestling programs and have a track record of placing students at service academies.

A 5th year is not a setback — it's an investment. Many of our most successful wrestlers and graduates came through prep school programs. If you're close but not quite there on test scores or academics, talk to our coaches about this option.

For Parents

Information for Parents & Guardians

We understand this is a big decision for your family. Here are the key facts:

Cost: USMMA is a fully funded federal academy. Tuition, room, board, books, and uniforms are all provided by the U.S. government. Your student's education is valued at over $275,000 — and it costs your family $0.

Career: Unlike other service academies, USMMA graduates are not required to serve on active duty. They can choose to work in the civilian maritime industry — where starting salaries are $150,000+ per year — or they can choose active duty military service in any branch.

Safety: USMMA takes the safety and well-being of midshipmen seriously. The Academy is located in Kings Point, NY, a quiet residential community on Long Island Sound, just 20 miles from New York City.

Wrestling: Our coaching staff is committed to the development of your student as both an athlete and a person. Wrestling at USMMA teaches discipline, resilience, and work ethic that translate directly into career success.
